My name isn't the only thing that's different

Sponsored “Thank You” Ads on Instagram

When I scroll for so long that I lose all feeling in my thumb, it’s time to put the phone down. When a “sponsored ad” in my feed gives me pause, I ask why? Olive and Piper, an online costume jewelry boutique, caught my eye a few times. Their digital ads featured simple, sharp imagery of stud earrings — a necessity when you don’t want to make a trip to the ER because your feisty baby tore your earlobe. It may have taken 7 or 8 times until I actually made it to the shopping cart stage, due to diversions (squirrel!), and that’s why retargeting is a godsend for retail and for distracted shoppers (oh, yeah, I did want to buy that!).

After the sale was confirmed, I saw the below ad in my Instagram feed, thanking me for my purchase with a video from the founders briefly explaining the evolution of the brand. I had the volume off, so the closed-captioning caught my eye. With so much digital clutter, it was a really nice touch, a little something different along my customer journey. And it will definitely make me consider this brand for additional purchases. I also received a thank you email from one of the founders, explaining how Covid may be slowing delivery, which I also appreciated. This is a team that spent time reviewing every step of the customer journey, and it will pay dividends. Kudos to Olive and Piper.

And they delivered…

A nice package, with each pair of earrings individually wrapped in its own pouch and a handwritten scribble on the notecard. Shine bright. Full circle marketing.
